Skip Trial, the race winner in 1985, went on to sire the three-time Horse of the Year, Skip Away. Danzig Connection won the race in 1986 following his signature victory in the Belmont Stakes that year. Danzig Connection is the only horse in Pegasus history to have also won a Triple Crown race. Cryptoclearance, who finished first in 1987 and went on to have a very successful stallion career, was an exceptional horse in his own right. Before retiring, he won the Florida Derby and the Donn Handicap. Brian’s Time, who won both the Jim Dandy Stakes and the Florida Derby in 1988, extended the winning streak of Pegasus contenders. Volponi won the Pegasus in 2001 and the Breeders’ Cup Classic in 2002 at odds of 44/1, making him the only Pegasus winner to also win a Breeders’ Cup competition. Other notable Pegasus winners include Behrens (1997) and Verrazano, both of whom have won numerous stakes races (2013).
