Johnstown America delivers 600 aluminum coal cars to Union
Pacific.
Johnstown, Pennsylvania, December 12, 2003 - Johnstown America Corporation
will complete delivery of 600 aluminum coal cars of two different types
to Union Pacific Railroad this month. The order includes 240 BethGon™
II gondolas and 360 AutoFlood III™ automatic discharge coal hopper cars.
According to Union Pacific officials, the cars will be used to transport
coal originating from Colorado to a variety of utilities.
Karen A. Watson, general director-mechanical purchasing at Union Pacific
said, "This acquisition supports Union Pacific's 'Car of the Future' strategy
which is a process of standardizing equipment types and upgrading our
fleet to higher capacity 286,000-pound gross rail load capability."
Timothy D. Johnson, Johnstown America's vice president, sales - western
region, said, "We are happy to provide these two car types for Union Pacific,
as they are our newest designs. We are certain these cars will bring added
efficiency to a good customer."
Johnstown America's BethGon II is an updated version of the traditional
BethGon car, which is the most commonly used coal gondola car in western
coal service. The aluminum BethGon, first introduced by Johnstown America
in 1985, is a proven design reflecting many years and billions of miles
of service. The aluminum AutoFlood III is a state of the art automatic
discharge car that features Johnstown America's MegaFlo door system. It
is a simple system that allows fast discharge of coal with extra wide
door openings and positive sealing when closed. The AutoFlood III cars
are also equipped with rotary couplers to enhance their versatility for
use at different utilities. Both cars feature lighter tare weight, higher
cubic capacity and durability to meet the rigors of long-haul coal train
service.
